Welcome to the careers’ section – this page includes information about a career in vascular surgery and courses run by the Rouleaux Club for students, junior doctors, and trainees.

What is Vascular Surgery?

Vascular Surgery is the specialty that manages vascular disease outside of the heart and cranium. This includes both the arterial, venous and lymphatic systems. When we talk about managing vascular disease this covers prevention, medical treatment (anti-platelets, anticoagulants, lysis, statins, vasodilators) interventions (open surgery and endovascular catheter based interventions) surveillance and follow up. The curriculum is therefore broad and this makes for a varied specialty that maintains interest throughout your career.

Introduction to Vascular Surgery Course

This one-day course is run by the Rouleaux Club and the Vascular Society of Great Britain & Ireland. Attendees will be offered hands-on training in vascular anastomosis, vascular ultrasound and cannulation, as well as demonstrations of endovascular techniques. They will meet trainees and consultants with a passion for vascular surgery. They will also be given advice on how to develop their portfolio and how to apply for training in vascular surgery.

Essay Competition

Our annual essay competition invites students and junior doctors to write a 1,500 word essay in response to one of three question prompts. For each category there will be a prize for the winning entry; and certificates of commendation for those scoring highly. All entrants will receive a certificate of acknowledgement.

Are you a medical student or junior doctor interested in vascular surgery but don’t know where to look to gain experience?
Fear not, for we have created a comprehensive list of Vascular Centres in the UK and Ireland and how you can get in touch!

FRCS Resources

As there are limited resources available and no official vascular FRCS question bank, the Rouelaux Club has put together a document to help members prepare for the vascular FRCS.  Revision styles vary from person to person, so these tips are personal opinions and advice only, and not an official document from the Vascular FRCS exam board. We hope this gives you some insight into the exam and helps you prepare. Good luck!
